Marriene Langton Principal/Tumuaki
Tēnā koutou e te whanau. This is my 16th year as tumuaki of our lovely kura. I am one-eyed when it comes to providing the very best education for all of our tamariki, strong connections to whanau and applying attachment theory so every child has a champion adult at our school who believes in them unconditionally. I just can’t see past it. Our kaiako and kaiawhina go the extra 50 miles to give our children the best chances to succeed. My family is number one. After 20 years of camping holidays in Kaiteriteri, Graham and I are recidivist “glampers “ and ready for new adventures in our latest caravan. It’s brilliant when our family joins us too.

Te Ara Koropiko West Spreydon School Hangi

A picture speaks a thousand words. Our kaiawhina serve the community every year by cooking and serving the hangi. Thanks to Dylan and Roy we have had the best ever hangi in the past 2 years. They seem to have the magic touch in terms of cooking time and technique. It is a mammoth task and they have a small group of helpers like Max and Chris who help out with the hard work. On the night a couple of dad's also rolled up their sleeves and quickly became part of the team. That is special. It really is an art form to make a hangi successful and we love the food, company, manaaki and generosity of our staff and others. This year so many parents and caregivers took the time to thank us and to send emails or give a thank you gift. The chocolates and chocolate cake were received with great joy. Thank you so much for your kindness to us. That was a very special way to show appreciation and it meant a lot to staff.

We are building a tradition of organizing a mihi whakatua to welcome new whanau to our kura. It was the first public performance for our tamariki and they did marvellously well. We are very proud of the ways in which we honour our Tiriti o Waitangi partnership and we are always looking for ways to include our families. Once you are a part of our kura whanau you will always be connected to us.
