Marriene Langton Principal/Tumuaki
Tēnā koutou e te whanau. This is my 16th year as tumuaki of our lovely kura. I am one-eyed when it comes to providing the very best education for all of our tamariki, strong connections to whanau and applying attachment theory so every child has a champion adult at our school who believes in them unconditionally. I just can’t see past it. Our kaiako and kaiawhina go the extra 50 miles to give our children the best chances to succeed. My family is number one. After 20 years of camping holidays in Kaiteriteri, Graham and I are recidivist “glampers “ and ready for new adventures in our latest caravan. It’s brilliant when our family joins us too.

Korowai Taonga from Chris Price

Over many hundreds of hours Chris wove this beautiful korowai and presented it as a gift to the school. It represents her story , and the Journey of Her Heart over this past year.

It has huge significance to our cultural narrative and was completed as apart of a Diploma course under the auspices of Ngai Tahu. The amount of work that has gone into the harvesting the harakeke  and preparation of the muka is a measure of the investment that has been made into this beautiful garment.

We had a special mihiwhakatau to honour this gift. Te Ao Marama spoke for us and honoured the hours of work, the taonga and the story and journey that Chris has taken to complete this for us. This ceremony was followed by  our Maunga Teitei cultural festival which was once again cancelled because of Covid restrictions. Where there's a will there's a way. Each year we look forward to our Kahukura Celebration where hundreds of parents and children from across the 7 schools, gather together to showcase and celebrate Maori and Pasifika culture.

Our children lead with pride.

This was such a beautiful celebration and the video recording will be added to the Kahukura library of events. Special thanks to Jared for his hours of sweat and tears cutting and editing  (and his church who loaned the very expensive equipment)

Painted hall and Christmas parade

Over the past weeks we have had our lovely community repainting the hall which was a drab and unwelcoming building. So much volunteer work has gone in to making this old girl habitable and smelling clean again. We live in hopes that one day the real gymnasium will be built and we will have all year round top rate facilities for our children.

Our friends and whanau group held a Christmas themed non uniform day to raise items  for a Christmas hamper raffle. It was hilarious to see the children and staff get into the spirit of the day. I think Matua Isaac looked a little dodgy but we love him anyway.
