Marriene Langton Principal/Tumuaki
Tēnā koutou e te whanau. This is my 16th year as tumuaki of our lovely kura. I am one-eyed when it comes to providing the very best education for all of our tamariki, strong connections to whanau and applying attachment theory so every child has a champion adult at our school who believes in them unconditionally. I just can’t see past it. Our kaiako and kaiawhina go the extra 50 miles to give our children the best chances to succeed. My family is number one. After 20 years of camping holidays in Kaiteriteri, Graham and I are recidivist “glampers “ and ready for new adventures in our latest caravan. It’s brilliant when our family joins us too.

Student v Staff Cricket Match 25 March 2022

What can you do on Friday 25 March, when Covid is wreaking havoc on a tired school community except have teachers organize a chaotic cricket match. It is also an anniversary we don't want to remember when we went into lockdown for the first time while we were on the Chernobyl site.  The fuse drummers fused and drummed their way through the entire match, just like I remember at Auckland Domain when I watched a game of kirikiti.

Someone accused the tumuaki of taking one of the balls and hiding it so the staff and trainee teachers could score more runs. Pish posh. Such a scandalous declaration.

Tam rolled out the nerf gun and it was game on.

A couple of motorists pulled over to watch. Goodness knows what they thought was happening.

Truly this was such a panacea for the worries of the last few weeks and there was so laughter and good feelings. The children won by one run. I am demanding a recount and video evidence.

One of our senior boys has said that we need to memorialize the day and make it an annual event. Game on. All of the staff are in.

Teacher professional learning

We had a staff hui via Zoom last night and Janice and Glen did a fantastic job of leading the staff. We had so many laughs as we did the learning. We have been working with  Rob Proffitt-White Director of Maths, Teaching and Learning, The Learner First Aotearoa and Australia. Janice lead us through some fun activities and in between eating a few snacks we did a lot of thinking and learning.

Glen took us outside onto the basketball court and he taught us some folk dance steps. Now that was hilarious. There were a couple of lads on the court playing basketball and they looked astonished at the teachers' capers. So be it. We have a team who keeps learning, despite the public humiliation. I think we may have discouraged the lads from considering a career in teaching.
